Be Willing to Feel a Little Awkward

by Dr. Todd Royse

A number of years ago a great mentor of mine, Dr. Greg Loman, did a demonstration in a seminar for all of us attending. He had us each clasp our own hands together with our fingers interlaced (like a prayer position) and notice which thumb went over which. It turned out the audience was about 50% right thumb over left and 50% left thumb over right.

He then told us to switch thumbs, so if you were left over right, you went right over left, and vice-versa. Try it now. It feels AWKWARD, doesn't it? His point in the example was, and I wholeheartedly agree, that change feels awkward, but "awkward" doesn't make it wrong.

As you are going through changes in your habits, changes in your communication with your family, your team, or your patients, it is OK to feel a little awkward! Remember the first time you palpated a spine or even rode a bike? It feels unnatural. So it is with any significant change in your thinking or your procedures in life. But once you make it a new habit, it feels like you've been doing it your whole life.

Know that when you're doing your first Doctor's Report, implementing the C-Factor, or anything else you learn, you won't always be pedaling smoothly in the beginning. So lighten up on yourself! It reminds me of a wonderful patient of mine who was killed in a car accident 5 years ago. He was one of the biggest servants I've ever met: always helping out at every event we had, always working to make God's will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. He wore a belt buckle that said,

Easy Does It
But Do It

So go do it!!!
